Home Sharing in Rio generated US$ 160 million in economic activity in 2015

Since launching our Airbnb Community Compact last November, Airbnb has consistently shared data to help societies and governments understand home sharing in their cities and make good decisions regarding the citizens who need the extra income to make ends meet.

Today we are releasing our first report about Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian Airbnb Community based on internal data and a survey of Rio hosts and guests conducted in February, 2016.

Today, our community shares over 90 thousand spaces spread across all Brazilian States. In Rio, hosts offer over 35 thousand listings across 80 neighborhoods in the city. More importantly, Airbnb is helping thousands of families make extra income in a period of economic hardship in the country.

Economic Impact

Last year, host income and guest spending generated an economic activity of $160 million helping spread income and business to parts of the city of Rio that may not usually see much economic activity. The typical host income was $ 2000, and 21% of hosts say this extra money helped save them from eviction or foreclosure of their homes. In Brazil as a whole, the typical host income was $ 1500, and, likewise, 18% of our community say the money helped pay the rent or mortgage, avoiding the loss of their homes.
