Airbnb and Zürich Tourism sign city tax agreement

  • From 1 August, Airbnb will automatically collect City Tax for all bookings in the Canton of Zurich
  • Expanded partnership: Airbnb also becomes a member of Zürich Tourism

From August 1, 2018, Airbnb will automatically collect the City Tax from guests for all bookings in Canton Zurich and transfer it to Zürich Tourism. Airbnb and Zürich Tourism have concluded a joint partnership agreement to this end. The partnership also includes Airbnb’s membership of Zürich Tourism.

Airbnb works proactively with municipalities, cantons and tourism organizations to support responsible tourism. There are agreements with Baselland Tourism and Zug Tourism for the automated collection and distribution of statutory accommodation taxes. Airbnb is in discussion with other cantons in this regard. Airbnb has already concluded such agreements with over 400 cities and regions worldwide.

In the canton of Zurich, Airbnb will automatically collect the city tax of CHF 2.50 per person per night when booking if guests stay with Zurich hosts and book via Airbnb.

Alexander Schwarz, General Manager Airbnb Germany, Austria and Switzerland, says: “Zurich Tourism stands for a future-oriented and sustainable development of tourism. We look forward to working with Zürich Tourism in the future and enabling all Zürichers to offer unique experiences to travelers from all over the world and to participate in the positive effects of tourism”.

Martin Sturzenegger, Director Zurich Tourism: “We are delighted about the partnership with Airbnb. Digitalization and thus also the shared economy have a decisive influence on the development of tourism. This cooperation strengthens Zurich as a destination. It is an asset for tourism, the hotel industry and especially for our guests.”
