Airbnb community gives back for International Nelson Mandela Day

“A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of.”

– Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela worked tirelessly to create a more equitable world and hold people in power accountable to bring his vision to life. To honor Mandela’s life and legacy, Airbnb hosts and employees are coming together around the world to dedicate a day of service in their communities for International Nelson Mandela Day.  Building upon our existing partnership with the Mandela Foundation, community members in around the world will be volunteering with local nonprofits.

“Mandela was a traveler. From 1960 to about 1962 when he was captured he traveled around the world. Asking for help – for people to be aware of our struggles and he was welcomed in those communities. He was called David Motsamai, and in my mother tongue Motsamai is the walker, the traveler. And I think if you are the traveler, your footsteps always leave something behind and that those footsteps should be about the lives that you impact all the time. And hopefully, you’ll be David Motsamais, in your own ways.”

Hosts in Capetown and Johannesburg are honoring Mandela on his birthday (July 18th) by packaging meals with Stop Hunger Now, to help end child hunger. Our London community is also helping to sort clothes for those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. The Airbnb community in Taichung and Toronto will also be volunteering with organizations working with homeless seniors.
