Airbnb Guests are Flocking to Nouvelle Aquitaine Region in France

Today, we are highlighting new data about the Airbnb community in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region in France. It shows that Airbnb helps grow and diversify tourism in the region, generates new economic activity, spreads benefits to more families and communities and supports local residents who share their homes.

Today’s report shows that hosts have spread and democratised the benefits of tourism, while providing guests with authentic and local travel experiences. Local residents are ambassadors for the region and share the best of their communities with guests from around the world.

Here are some highlights from the report:

  • Airbnb generates new economic activity – The Airbnb community generated an estimated €525 million in total economic activity in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region over the last 12 months, including Airbnb guest spending and host income. Airbnb hosts keep 97 cents of every euro they charge to rent their space.
  • The Airbnb community helps grow and diversify tourism – Hosts on Airbnb in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region have welcomed over 880,000 guest arrivals in the past 12 months alone. This has grown from 5,000 guests on Airbnb in 2012. Around 75 percent of travellers are French, mostly coming from Ile-de-France, Nouvelle Aquitaine et Occitanie.
  • The Airbnb community helps spread the benefits of tourism – The Nouvelle Aquitaine region is home to more than 36,000 listings on Airbnb in 2,800 cities and villages. This has grown from 500 listings in 2012. According to the French National Institute of Statistics, more than 2,200 of these municipalities, such as Puymoyen or Ludon-Médoc have no hotels. Airbnb helps guests discover communities they might have missed and spreads benefits to more families and local businesses. Around 80 percent of guests on Airbnb in Nouvelle Aquitaine said they chose Airbnb to explore a specific community.
  • Guests choose Airbnb for an authentic and local travel experience – Guests on Airbnb in Nouvelle Aquitaine stay an average of 3.8 days and around 80 percent of guests said they chose Airbnb ‘to live like a local’. More than 60 percent of guests on Airbnb said they are likely to return to the region following their experience on Airbnb. One third of guests are families with children and around two thirds of guests come to the region to spend their holidays.
  • Airbnb hosts are typically regular members of the community – The typical Airbnb host in Nouvelle Aquitaine shares their home for 22 days a year and earns an additional €2,300 a year. The average host is 46-years-old. La Rochelle and Biarritz feature in the list of the top 20 cities that have the biggest percentage of hosts aged over 60 years in Europe.  
  • Bordeaux – The regional Capital of Nouvelle Aquitaine counts 6,000 homes on Airbnb. A typical host in Bordeaux shares their home for 27 days a year and earns an additional €2,100 a year. 89% of hosts only have one listing on Airbnb. The hosts in Bordeaux welcomed almost 200,000 travellers during the past 12 months.

We want to be good partners to everyone in the region and support the sustainable growth of innovative forms of tourism. Earlier this year, we began collecting and remitting tourist taxes on behalf of hosts in Bordeaux, Biarritz and La Rochelle.

This report is based on Airbnb internal data between October 2015 and October 2016 and survey data,  and is part of our commitment to be good partners and share data with cities and regions. Earlier this month, we published a report on Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region and we will regularly release new data about the Airbnb Community in the other regions in France over the coming months.
