With more than 9,900 hosts in Toronto, and over 60,000 across the country, Airbnb is committed to being a thoughtful and engaged community partner in Canada. We’ve partnered with Habitat for Humanity in Toronto to give our host community and staff an opportunity to give back to the neighbourhoods they love.
Recently, members of the Toronto Airbnb team and several hosts from across the city worked on building a house for a local family in Scarborough. Habitat is building 50 stacked townhouses on this site, located near the Malvern Town Centre. The project is expected to be ready for occupancy in spring of 2018.
Habitat for Humanity GTA (Greater Toronto Area) is dedicated to mobilizing volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
As a community partner, we understand that the cost of living in Toronto is an increasing challenge for many people who live here. More than 50 per cent of our hosts use the supplemental income that they earn from Airbnb to pay their bills or contribute to the cost of housing. In fact, just last year, more than 10 per cent of our hosts were saved from eviction because of Airbnb.
We are extremely excited about our build day and the opportunity to help make a real difference in the lives of a hard-working family. As sponsors of the build day, Airbnb is also working with our host community to fundraise for Habitat for Humanity GTA.
Background on Habitat for Humanity GTA:
Habitat for Humanity GTA is a non-profit housing organization working with communities to build homes with local families in need of affordable housing. By offering zero down payment, no-interest mortgages capped at 30 percent of a family’s income, Habitat for Humanity GTA empowers families to achieve stability and self-reliance, so that they can build a better life for themselves and their children. With the support of donors and volunteers, we build homes along with our partner families in Brampton, Caledon, Toronto, and York Region, serving two-thirds of the GTA. Since 1988, Habitat GTA has built more than 300 homes in partnership with families. Habitat GTA is one of more than 1,400 Habitat for Humanity affiliates worldwide sharing a common vision and purpose.
Habitat for Humanity GTA also operates 10 Habitat ReStore retail home improvement stores across the GTA, which sell donated, new and gently-used home furnishing and renovation materials at a fraction of the original price. ReStore proceeds go directly toward building Habitat homes while also helping the environment, by diverting thousands of tons of household materials from landfill.
