Airbnb in Michigan – 2016 in review

Michigan Airbnb Hosts Earned $25.2 Million, Welcomed 188,000 People in 2016

Airbnb, the world’s leading community driven hospitality company, announced today that its Michigan host community earned a combined $25.2 million in supplemental income while welcoming approximately 188,000 people to the state in 2016.

The 188,000 guest arrivals to Michigan via Airbnb represents 136 percent year-over-year growth. This comes as Michiganders increasingly embrace the home sharing platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income and make ends meet. There are now 4,100 Airbnb hosts throughout the state, representing 78 percent year-over-year growth. And the fastest growing demographic among Airbnb hosts nationally are senior women.

The City of Detroit has emerged as a leader within the global home sharing industry. The Motor City was one of 12 global launch cities for Airbnb’s new Experiences platform, which offer guests handcrafted activities designed and led by local Detroit experts. Experiences – which was launched in November – offers unprecedented access and deep insights into Detroit’s communities and places that guests wouldn’t otherwise come across through traditional tourism platforms. Additionally, Detroit was one of six global launch cities for Airbnb’s new Insider Guidebooks, which provides prospective tourists access to cultural experts and neighborhood insiders that Airbnb has identified to recommend the hidden gems within Detroit.

The launches of Experiences and Insider Guidebooks in Detroit are products of Airbnb’s collaborative partnership with the Duggan Administration to catalyze the City’s tourism industry and help fuel Detroit’s historic comeback.
