We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the Airbnb Poverty Alleviation and Youth Innovation Competition at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing.
Cao Pengcheng, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, and An Li, Vice President of Airbnb China, attended the launch ceremony.
The competition is guided by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development; co-sponsored by Airbnb, Yanqing District Tourism Development Committee, and Miyun District Tourism Development Committee; and partnered with Capital University of Economics and Business, Beijing International Studies University, and Beijing Union University.
An said: “We are delighted to be working alongside tourism authorities and universities to promote home sharing as a means for economic opportunity for underserved communities. We hope our platform will become a link between students and villagers, while encouraging youth entrepreneurship and rural development.”
In order to cultivate a model of sustainable rural tourism, promote the quality of rural villages around Beijing, and enhance the popularity of rural tourism in Beijing, Airbnb jointly initiated the “Home Sharing and Rural Revitalization Plan” in cooperation with Beijing Yanqing District Tourism Development Committee and Miyun District Tourism Development Committee. As an important part of this plan, the Airbnb Poverty Alleviation and Youth Innovation Competition aims to enhance youth innovation and entrepreneurship by encouraging students to design and promote rural homestays. Students will also be tasked with sharing knowledge about the sharing economy with rural residents, helping them upgrade their tourism service skills, improve tourism quality, promote poverty alleviation through tourism, and revitalize rural development.
Cao Pengcheng, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, said, “Innovation is the ladder for national progress. Entrepreneurship is the theme of the era. The competition provides a good platform and opportunity for young entrepreneurs to innovate, which helps us to implement the strategy of village rejuvenation and give full play to the role of tourism in enriching income in the suburbs of Beijing. I wish the competition a complete success.”
The Airbnb Poverty Alleviation and Youth Innovation Competition will last for three months. The participating students will visit rural homes, then develop their design and management proposals under the guidance of professional designers. Airbnb will help students remodel the homes and optimize the listings on Airbnb to attract travelers from around the world. The students will also educate the local villagers about digital media operations and housing management.
As a leader and pioneer of the global sharing economy, Airbnb continues to promote shared economic development in China. In October 2017, Airbnb worked with the Guilin Municipal Commission of Tourism Development to implement the Guilin Rural Tourism Poverty Alleviation Project, which helps poverty-stricken areas in China escape poverty through tourism development. Airbnb is leveraging its advantages to help develop rural homestays, spur tourism, and promote rural economic development. The project is an important and effective measure for Airbnb to support the efforts to rejuvenate rural areas and eliminate poverty.
