Over a year ago, Airbnb announced the most significant development in the company’s history: the rollout of Airbnb Experiences. A natural extension of the local, authentic accommodations provided by our homes hosts, Airbnb Experiences allow small business owners, new entrepreneurs and community non-profits to create immersive experiences for travelers. From a podcast production lesson in Chicago, to honey making in the Santa Monica Mountains, and a bike tour through LA with a landscape architect, the options are never-ending.
Since launching Airbnb Experiences, we’ve seen some exciting growth. Compared to the same time last year, global weekly guest bookings are up over 2,000% and the number of active experiences grew 500%. Globally we currently offer more than 4,000 experiences across 50 cities, and in the US alone, we now offer over 1,000 experiences and counting.
For our growing host community, sharing your passion with the world can be a powerful tool to earn valuable supplementary income. In fact, in the U.S., the average earnings for someone who hosts experiences nine times per month is $6, 200 annually while the average income for someone who is able to host more frequently, 15 times or so a month, is upwards of $24,000 annually.
While many Airbnb Experiences are led by small business owners and new entrepreneurs, others are led by local non-profits, who keep all of the money they earn to put back into their organizations.
Vy, one of our Social Impact experience hosts in Harlem, grew up surrounded by music and founded the Mama Foundation of the Arts to share her passion for gospel, jazz, and rhythm with the world. Her foundation preserves this artform for current and future generations, as well as provides quality training and employment in the performing arts to both youths and adults. Vy takes guests from around the world on a historical lesson Harlem through music.
With Airbnb Social Impact Experiences, 100% of the money guests pay goes back to the Mama Foundation of the Arts, allowing Vy to grow her foundation while educating travelers about Harlem and the gospel music that has long been integral to the community.
In 2018, we are excited to share that we’ll be investing $5 million in the U.S. in our efforts to develop, support, and promote entrepreneurs through Airbnb Experiences, and expand to 200 cities across the country.
By attracting travelers from around the world who seek to see cities through the eyes of a local, Airbnb Experiences bring real economic value to neighborhoods and non-profits that previously would not have benefited from tourism. Even more, it provides a unique opportunity for people to earn extra income by showcasing their knowledge and talent with an audience of millions.
