Service Year Alliance (SYA) members and Airbnb hosts gathered at Los Angeles City Hall for a presentation by Councilmember Joe Buscaino recognizing SYA for its efforts and investments in LA and how partners like Airbnb help make SYA a success. Airbnb works with SYA to provide free or low-cost short-term housing for service year corps members as they transition to their new cities for their year of service. Through the program, they are encouraged to stay with local hosts who are often their lifeline to the new community – introducing them to public transit, favorite neighborhoods, and hidden gems.
Before the presentation, LA hosts and SYA members mingled over a light breakfast reception, while Airbnb & SYA made a few welcome remarks thanking attendees for their time and support. The LA host community has come through in a big way, welcoming 37 service year corps members at a discount as they relocate for their year of service with local organizations like City Year and Reading Partners.
Councilmember Buscaino, Brian Campain from City Year & Amy Baker from SYA then took the podium for the presentation. Councilmember Buscaino commended the 3,500 SYA corps members in LA as well as City Year for their efforts to revitalize the city, uplift and educate children at risk, empower communities who are struggling with poverty and making the community stronger. SYA and City Year each shared their visions for expanding services in LA, and thanked Airbnb for helping to offset housing costs and logistics which can be a huge barrier for young people considering and beginning their service years. City Year shared testimonies from members thanking Airbnb for their relocation support.
“The voucher really gave me some relief during a time when I was looking for a place. My host was incredible and Airbnb really helped me, especially during these first weeks of service. Again, thank you Airbnb for making that difference.”
– City Year member
Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson closed the presentation commending City Year and SYA for their work in LA, and thanked Airbnb for stepping up to help members find affordable and safe housing. The cost of living in LA is a huge challenge for members living on modest stipends, and often there are few or no hotels in the areas members serve.
Thanks to the generosity of the LA host community, service year corps members can focus more of their energy on providing their communities with the best service possible.
