Community Tourism Programme: our partners

In 2017 we launched a €5m Community Tourism Programme to support innovative projects, in local communities, that encourage healthy tourism. The Community Tourism Programme forms part of our Office of Healthy Tourism, and is available for projects that welcome tourism in new ways to strengthen communities, empower citizens, and preserve and promote local culture.

Placemaking

Italy / Community Events in Matera

Matera has been selected as the European Capital of Culture 2019. In 2018, Project Fondazione Matera will put on a series of community events and cultural activities for both locals and guests to prepare for the big year ahead. Partner:European Capital of Culture 2019 Matera, Italy

UK / Celebrating Culture Outside the City Centre

We are supporting The Mayor’s London Borough of Culture award, which is focused on bringing people out of the city centre to experience the life and culture of outer boroughs. The commitment covers two years. Partner:Mayor’s London Borough of Culture

Germany / A New Way to Experience Munich

We are supporting the development of the “Weg der Münchner,” a new trail route over 100 km connecting historic sites, traditional neighborhoods, small businesses and greenspaces across and around Munich allowing guests to connect with locals and experience the best of Munich’s culture beyond the hotspots. Germany / Helping Youth Explore Europe

We are supporting the travel of young Europeans throughout Europe to explore the diversity of the European identity. Partner: Schwarzkopf Stiftung

UK / Putting An Outer Borough on the Map

UK / Celebrating Centenary Year of Women Votes

We are supporting a series of processions and festivals across Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland to celebrate 100 years since women gained the right to vote. Partner: Artichoke

UK / Connecting Locals to Fringe

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the largest arts festival in the world. Airbnb will work with the Festival to help give locals access to events they usually would not be able to participate in. Partner: Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Spain / Celebrating with Pride

We are supporting Gayles TV and ACEGAL, the main LGBT small business association in Catalonia, to organize a series of activities during Bcn Pride , including LGBT Refugees Conference, social impact experiences and an instagram competition Partner: GAYLES LGBT Association

Spain / Celebrating Sustainable Tourism

We supported the Terres Film Festival, an annual international Eco & Travel Film Festival showing films focused on sustainability, development and natural tourism.  Partner: Terres Film Festival

Portugal / Supporting Innovation in Tourism

We are partnering with Beta I to promote healthy travel, supporting Lisbon Tourism Summit, an event dedicated to the tourism industry with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Partner: Beta I

Denmark / Celebrating The Home

Together with the Danish Architecture Centre, we are exploring Danish homes throughout the ages. This exhibition will attract international audiences as well as locals from beyond Copenhagen, inviting them to explore how the concept of the home has evolved and how it is changing. Visitors will also have the chance to take tours of the city in neighbourhoods they might not otherwise explore and go ‘behind the scenes’ into local hosts’ homes. UK / Helping Neighbors Connect

Airbnb is supporting More in Common to participate in The Great Get Together, an event which looks to build stronger communities by connecting people across the country to one another. The weekend-long event, which is organised by the Jo Cox Foundation, aims to host a series of community celebrations from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th June. Partner: More in Common

Switzerland / Putting the Environment First While Travelling

My Green Trip is an innovative non-profit organisation that helps travellers connect to a network of environmental organisations, a cleaning kit and cleanup activities on their trip. Partner: MyGreenTrip

Spain / An Off-The-Beaten Track Travel Lab

The IED Madrid is a Higher Centre for Design that is comprised of 11 schools in Italy, Spain and Brazil. The project will create an innovation lab to explore and enhance sustainable tourism. The aim is to grow a segment of traveller that goes off the beaten path of tourist guidebook recommendations and explores the craft and cultural heritage of a destination. Partner: IED Madrid

France / Supporting Rural Tourism Across France

Airbnb joined forces with Bienvenue à la ferme, France’s leading network of farm-to-table produce and agricultural hospitality, and Miimosa, leader in crowdfunding for agricultural and food projects; to provide financial support to ten innovative projects focused on growing rural tourism across France. Italy / Discover an Italian Borghi

In the Year of Villages, Airbnb partnered with over 40 Italian villages to launch a national campaign to promote and support them and their communities. Showcasing these small Italian towns to travellers from all over the world means offering insight into their unique landscapes, traditions and cultures and helping to improve their local economies by encouraging sustainable and healthy tourism off-the-beaten-track. Germany / Growing Urban Street Art

Airbnb was excited to partner with the CityLeaks public festival, which celebrates and promotes contemporary urban and street art in Cologne, last year focused around the topic of “Sharing Cities“. Partner: City Leaks. Read more about the project here.

Germany / Bitkom “Innovators‘ Pitch” Award at the Hub Conference

Three innovative, early-phase startups pitched for the price of 5,000 EUR and a Bitkom (Germany’s biggest and most renowned ICT association) membership in front of an audience of around 500 people in the category ‘travel & tourism’. Partner: Bitkom

Spain / Airbnb Travel Tech Award

Last summer, we launched the Airbnb Travel Tech Award, in partnership with Barcelona Tech City and Mobile World Capital. The project invited start-ups across Spain to compete for funding and a chance to speak at the Mobile World Congress Conference in San Francisco to showcase their idea and visit Airbnb HQ. Germany / Belong Anywhere with Kirchentag

Innovation

Italy / Made in Italy

‘Made in Italy’ aims to promote genuine Italian food and fight Italian sounding products that are jeopardising the Italian Agri-Food industry. The projects introduce travellers to local farmers and experience the craft and taste for themselves! Partner: The Italian Association of Farmers and NIAF. Portugal / Travel, Tourism and Start Ups

Airbnb was thrilled to support a five month program for startups across Portugal, exploring innovative ideas and offering real solutions to challenges in the travel space. The accelerator programme offers a week-long boot camp culminating in a ‘pitch-day’. Partner: Beta I and Turismo de Portugal. Read more about the program here

Why aren’t there more female entrepreneurs in travel? This project sought to address that by investing in female entrepreneurship across Spain whilst at the same time, highlighting some of the industries challenges and opportunities.
