In 2017 we launched a €5m Community Tourism Programme to support innovative projects, in local communities, that encourage healthy tourism. The Community Tourism Programme forms part of our Office of Healthy Tourism, and is available for projects that welcome tourism in new ways to strengthen communities, empower citizens, and preserve and promote local culture.

We are supporting the development of the “Weg der Münchner,” a new trail route over 100 km connecting historic sites, traditional neighborhoods, small businesses and greenspaces across and around Munich allowing guests to connect with locals and experience the best of Munich’s culture beyond the hotspots. Denmark / Celebrating The Home
Together with the Danish Architecture Centre, we are exploring Danish homes throughout the ages. This exhibition will attract international audiences as well as locals from beyond Copenhagen, inviting them to explore how the concept of the home has evolved and how it is changing. Visitors will also have the chance to take tours of the city in neighbourhoods they might not otherwise explore and go ‘behind the scenes’ into local hosts’ homes. Partner: Danish Architecture Centre

Spain / An Off-The-Beaten Track Travel Lab
The IED Madrid is a Higher Centre for Design that is comprised of 11 schools in Italy, Spain and Brazil. The project will create an innovation lab to explore and enhance sustainable tourism. The aim is to grow a segment of traveller that goes off the beaten path of tourist guidebook recommendations and explores the craft and cultural heritage of a destination. Partner: IED Madrid
France / Supporting Rural Tourism Across France
Airbnb joined forces with Bienvenue à la ferme, France’s leading network of farm-to-table produce and agricultural hospitality, and Miimosa, leader in crowdfunding for agricultural and food projects; to provide financial support to ten innovative projects focused on growing rural tourism across France. Italy / Discover an Italian Borghi
In the Year of Villages, Airbnb partnered with over 40 Italian villages to launch a national campaign to promote and support them and their communities. Showcasing these small Italian towns to travellers from all over the world means offering insight into their unique landscapes, traditions and cultures and helping to improve their local economies by encouraging sustainable and healthy tourism off-the-beaten-track. Germany / Bitkom “Innovators‘ Pitch” Award at the Hub Conference
Three innovative, early-phase startups pitched for the price of 5,000 EUR and a Bitkom (Germany’s biggest and most renowned ICT association) membership in front of an audience of around 500 people in the category ‘travel & tourism’. Partner: Bitkom
Spain / Airbnb Travel Tech Award
Last summer, we launched the Airbnb Travel Tech Award, in partnership with Barcelona Tech City and Mobile World Capital. The project invited start-ups across Spain to compete for funding and a chance to speak at the Mobile World Congress Conference in San Francisco to showcase their idea and visit Airbnb HQ. Germany / Belong Anywhere with Kirchentag

‘Made in Italy’ aims to promote genuine Italian food and fight Italian sounding products that are jeopardising the Italian Agri-Food industry. Airbnb was thrilled to support a five month program for startups across Portugal, exploring innovative ideas and offering real solutions to challenges in the travel space.
