Airbnb releases Florida university economic impact report

Airbnb recently released data indicating the meaningful economic impact of home sharing during major college commencement ceremonies throughout Florida.

For graduation weekends throughout the state, local Airbnb host communities are expanding lodging capacity and offering affordable rates for visiting families and loved ones. With hotels often selling out due to the influx of college parents, commencement ceremonies have long been known as sources of an unfortunate degree of hotel price gouging in Florida cities, which the rise of home sharing has helped alleviate.

For communities like Tallahassee, Gainesville, Davie and Jacksonville, the local commencements ushered in the largest influxes of guests to those respective cities in the history of Airbnb’s platform.

“As a Gator alumnus, it’s thrilling to see our platform expanding lodging capacity and facilitating significant economic activity for Gainesville and other Florida communities with large universities,” said Tom Martinelli, Airbnb Florida policy director.

“Our hope is that state and local lawmakers will act to protect the property rights of the home sharing community so that we can continue to build on this economic activity.”

For this year’s commencements, local counties will capitalize further from new tax revenue. Airbnb now has tax agreements in place to collect and remit local bed taxes in most of the counties with prominent Florida universities, including Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough, Leon, Lee and Orange. Airbnb is currently engaged in productive conversations with both Escambia County (home of the University of West Florida) and Alachua County (home of the University of Florida) towards prospective bed tax partnerships as well.

The commencement data can be found in full below. Please note that due to the market sizes of Miami, Tampa and Orlando, data is inclusive only for the neighborhoods of the respective universities rather than the entire city.
