Hosts say hello to small businesses in Bernal Heights

When travellers visit San Francisco for the first time there are attractions that are considered must do. Think, Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz.

But when an Airbnb guest visits San Francisco we know they also want to discover other exciting, vibrant neighborhoods and have a uniquely San Francisco experience. Enter our hosts, who provide much more than just a place to stay –  they come with unique local knowledge for their guests.

Last week, nearly 35 hosts met up in Bernal Heights to mix and mingle and to explore and discover this special neighborhood. They met with small business owners to learn about unique places they can recommend to their guests. The goal is to connect our hosts and guests to off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, and prepare businesses for visitors from around the world and the additional tourist dollars that comes from increased foot traffic in the neighborhood.

Starting at local favorite, Progressive Grounds, hosts met up for coffee, snacks and wine. From there, hosts headed out on Cortland Ave, the main merchant corridor in Bernal Heights, to check out all of its unique offerings. Stops included, among others, Epicurean Trader a specialty food and beverage store with small batch artisan products.

Epicurean Trader

Succulence, a local business that connects people with items for their home and garden and fosters a succulent lifestyle through plants, art, clothing, technology and design and Heartfelt, an old fashioned general store with a modern twist.

By encouraging guests to visit local neighborhoods, Airbnb hosts help small businesses.

Tammy Tresko, a host from the Excelsior said, “I form a special bond with many of the visitors I host and part of that comes from showing them unique places in San Francisco that they might not necessarily find from looking at a tourist guide. In fact, many times I become the tour guide and join them on their adventure in the city.” She continued, “I appreciate the opportunity to meet up with other hosts and talk to the small business owners I often refer my guests to visit.”
