Indiana Airbnb hosts earned $20.7 million, welcomed 175,000 guests in 2017

Airbnb, the world’s leading community-driven hospitality company, announced today that its Indiana host community earned a combined $20.7 million in supplemental income while welcoming approximately 175,000 guest arrivals to the state in 2017.

The 175,000 guest arrivals to Indiana via Airbnb represents 108% year-over-year growth. This comes as Hoosiers increasingly embrace the home sharing platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income and make ends meet. There are now just under 3,600 Indiana hosts who share their homes for via Airbnb, 37% of whom simply share an extra, unused room (i.e. empty nester). Those Indiana hosts typically earn about $4,700 annually in supplemental income through Airbnb.

Statewide data indicates that Airbnb and its host community appear to be complementing — rather than competing with — the Indiana hotel industry. Reports from the Purdue Hospitality and Tourism Research Center and the Indiana Office of Tourism Development demonstrate that Indiana hotel occupancy rates and revenue have steadily climbed in the past year, in parallel to Airbnb’s growth. This indicates that Airbnb is opening up the state to a new slice of prospective tourists by catering to travelers less able to afford hotels, those who desire to stay in neighborhoods or cities that lack hotels, and families who prefer to be together under one roof.

The 2017 results come on the heels of a new report highlighting Indianapolis as the #1 trending American city for Airbnb guests.
