Kansas Airbnb hosts earned $4.2 million, welcomed 47,000 guests in 2017

Airbnb, the world’s leading community driven hospitality company, announced today that its Kansas host community earned a combined $4.2 million in supplemental income while welcoming approximately 47,000 guest arrivals to the state in 2017.

The 289,000 guest arrivals to Kansas via Airbnb represents 125% year-over-year growth. This comes as Kansas homeowners increasingly embrace the home sharing platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income and make ends meet. There are now 900 Kansans who share their homes for via Airbnb, half of whom simply share an extra, unused room (i.e. empty nester). Those Kansas hosts typically earn about $3,400 annually in supplemental income through Airbnb.

Statewide data indicates that Airbnb and its host community appear to be complementing — rather than competing with — the Kansas hotel industry. The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism’s FY2017 report showed Kansas hotel revenues continuing to steadily increase— all in parallel to Airbnb’s growth. This suggests that Airbnb is opening up the state to a new slice of prospective tourists by catering to travelers less able to afford hotels, those who desire to stay in neighborhoods or cities that lack hotels, and families who prefer to be together under one roof.

In addition to the new income going into the pockets of Kansas Airbnb hosts, the state is generating new revenue through a historic tax agreement which took effect on February 1 allowing allows Airbnb to collect and remit the Kansas taxes on behalf of its hosts.
