LA county airbnb hosts earned $613 million, welcomed more than 2.7 million guests in 2018

Airbnb, the world’s leading community driven hospitality company, announced today that Los Angeles County was the #1 destination in California last year. The company’s host community earned a combined $613 million in supplemental income while welcoming approximately 2.7 million guest arrivals in 2018.

This comes as Los Angeles County residents increasingly embrace the home sharing platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income and make ends meet. There are now over 27,000 Los Angeles County hosts who share their homes via Airbnb, typically earning about $11,400 annually in supplemental income.

Statewide, Airbnb hosts earned $2 billion in revenue and welcomed 9 million guest arrivals. In addition to the new income going into the pockets of Airbnb hosts, cities and counties are generating new revenue through tax agreements that allow Airbnb to collect and remit the local taxes on behalf of its hosts. In 2018 Airbnb hosts remitted more than $115 million in taxes to cities and counties in California. In the City of Los Angeles, Airbnb hosts have remitted more than $100 million since August 2016.

Airbnb also significantly expanded Experiences throughout California in 2018, offering handcrafted activities led by local experts in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and more. Airbnb Experiences is creating new economic opportunities for California residents by allowing them to unlock their talents and interests and make money from them, catering to the hundreds of millions of people that use Airbnb’s platform to discover unique and authentic travel experiences. Experiences is expected to expand further in California in 2019, and the Experiences currently available can be found here.
