Letting the Good Times Roll with Airbnb During New Orleans’ Jazz Fest

New Orleans’ annual Jazz Fest is a celebration of the city’s unique traditions and musical heritage. As one of the biggest events in New Orleans each year, Jazz Fest  attracts visitors from all over the world.

This year, nearly 20,000 guests will stay in New Orleans during Jazz Fest using Airbnb. Many will travel to New Orleans from some of the United States other top musical destinations, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Austin.

But beyond reveling in some of the best music around, Airbnb guests – and hosts – will generate significant economic benefits for the local community.

In total, Airbnb will generate an estimated $17 million in economic activity for New Orleans during Jazz Fest.  That breaks down to over $5 million in income for Airbnb hosts, and nearly $12 million in spending by Airbnb guests at New Orleans businesses and restaurants.

Even more exciting is where that economic activity will take place. One of the benefits of home sharing is that it attracts guests seeking a different travel experience – the ability to “live like a local” outside the traditional tourism and hospitality districts. In New Orleans, that translates to increased economic opportunities for residents and businesses outside of the most popular tourism areas during events like Jazz Fest.

While hosts and guests continue to support neighborhoods in the French Quarter, Garden District and the Marigny, over 50% of Airbnb guests during Jazz Fest will stay in other areas of the city. In fact, fifteen different neighborhoods will welcome at least 200 Airbnb visitors during Jazz Fest.

That’s good news for the whole city. Our data shows that 99% of New Orleans hosts refer their guests to local businesses, and that at least 40% of guest spending occurs in the local neighborhoods where they stay.

And when it comes to making Airbnb a part of their Jazz Fest experience, visitors are only getting started. The 20,000 total guests anticipated this year is nearly two and a half times higher than the number who used Airbnb during last year’s festival.

New Orleans is set for another memorable festival. We look forward to celebrating Jazz Fest with the Airbnb community and the people of New Orleans. Laissez les bon temps rouler!
