Meet Michèle who shares her home to meet new people from all around the world

Why did you choose to share your home?

I got divorced two years ago and found myself alone. I have a 16-year-old son and I was no longer eligible for unemployment benefit. I was conscious of the fact that I was facing a meagre retirement so I decided to pre-empt this by finding a solution as quickly as possible. As I have a positive temperament and I like human contact, I decided to open up my apartment to Airbnb travellers. This allows me to have an additional income, which I don’t think I could live without now.

Why do you love sharing?

As a former alpine ski professional for Belgium, I travelled a lot during my 10-year career. I was often welcomed during my travels. It is right and fitting that I should open my door to guests from all over the world just as my hosts welcomed me during those 10 years.

What local gem do I recommend to my guests?

Usually, I advise guests to go for a walk around the Woluwé Shopping Centre, which is 200 metres from my home. I know that usually they have a small budget for buying gifts or taking home souvenirs. So I encourage them to spend it in the local corner shops so they can discover the delights Belgium has to offer.
