Airbnb announces economic impact results during MLB’s spring training

Airbnb Florida recently released economic impact data following the culmination of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) spring training in Florida.

Florida’s Grapefruit League brought 15 MLB teams to 12 Florida cities, primarily in Central and Southwest Florida. All cities saw a significant spikes in Airbnb guest arrivals during the preseason baseball training as compared to the prior 5-week stretch.

Mid-sized cities such as Jupiter (133% Airbnb spike), Lakeland (140% spike), Port St. Lucie (111% spike), Dunedin (129% Airbnb spike) and Port Charlotte (157% spike) all benefited significantly from local Airbnb hosts helping to expand lodging capacity and welcome more visitors during MLB’s Spring Training.

However, larger vacation rental markets such as Sarasota (100% spike), Fort Myers (112% spike) Clearwater (128% spike) Bradenton (88% spike) and Tampa (92% spike), which receive steady streams of Airbnb travelers year-round, also experienced noticeable economic impacts as clubs with large fan bases like the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees attracted their followers to those respective cities.

In all but two of the Florida cities, residents of the MLB team’s home state accounted for the top supply of Airbnb guests during this stretch. Highlights include:

  • Dunedin (home of the Blue Jays) where 13% of guests during this stretch were from Ontario
  • Jupiter (home of the Cardinals) where 10% of guests were from Missouri
  • Fort Myers (home of the Twins and Red Sox) where 15% of the guests were from Minnesota or Massachusetts
  • Port St. Lucie (home of the Mets) where 16% of guests were from New York State

“Baseball-related tourism represents a foundational component of the local economies for these cities,” said Tom Martinelli, public policy director for Airbnb Florida. “By expanding lodging capacity for regions with limited hotel inventory, Airbnb hosts helped welcome more families and baseball fans to their cities while serving as ambassadors for their local communities.”
