Nebraska Airbnb hosts earned $4.3 million, welcomed 46,000 guests in 2017

Airbnb, the world’s leading community-driven hospitality company, announced today that its Nebraska host community earned a combined $4.3 million in supplemental income while welcoming approximately 46,000 guest arrivals to the state in 2017.

The 46,000 guest arrivals to Nebraska via Airbnb represent 107% year-over-year growth. This comes as Nebraskans increasingly embrace the home sharing platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income and make ends meet. There are now just under 2,700 Nebraska hosts who share their homes for via Airbnb, about half of whom simply share an extra, unused room (i.e. empty nester). Those Nebraska hosts typically earn about $4,700 annually in supplemental income through Airbnb.

Statewide data indicates that Airbnb and its host community appear to be complementing — rather than competing with — the Nebraska hotel industry. Reports from the Hotel News Now demonstrate that hotel occupancy rates in the greater Omaha area have risen in parallel to Airbnb’s growth. This indicates that Airbnb is opening up the state to a new slice of prospective tourists by catering to travelers less able to afford hotels, those who desire to stay in neighborhoods or cities that lack hotels, and families who prefer to be together under one roof.

The home sharing community provides significant value through expanded lodging capacity for Nebraska communities when hotels sell out during big events, including Omaha for the Berkshire Hathaway investors conference and Lincoln during Husker football games. In 2017, Airbnb also released data indicating the potential of home sharing for more rural communities of Nebraska that lack traditional hotel accommodations.
