Starting 1st of July 2017 Airbnb will collect occupancy taxes in the Canton of Zug

Together with Zug Tourismus, we have signed an agreement to automate the collection of occupancy taxes via the Airbnb platform starting 1st of July:

Zug is the first Swiss canton to introduce an automated procedure for the collection of the occupancy tax in partnership with us. This digital solution will make collecting and remitting tourist taxes quick and simple for everyone.

Across the world, Airbnb has worked to collect and remit tourist, hotel and occupancy taxes with over 270 jurisdictions, generating more than $240 million in tax revenues. We are excited to expand this initiative to Switzerland, and we are currently talking to more cantons, who we hope to partner with in future.

Alexander Schwarz, General Manager Airbnb Germany, Austria and Switzerland, says:

“We are very excited to partner with Zug Tourism to help ensure they receive this important financial resource, without unnecessary administrative burdens. This joint agreement is a great example of the progressive approach of Switzerland using the chances of digitalisation and ensuring that guests, hosts, and the local authorities can benefit from digital technology.”

Seraina Koller, General Manager Zug Tourismus:

“For a long time, the same conditions for the payment of occupancy taxes have been requested for hotels as well as those renting out private homes and rooms. We are very excited that Zug is the first Canton in Switzerland to work with Airbnb to collect and occupancy tourist taxes. The result of this very cooperative negotiation speaks for itself: the automated tax collection reduces the administrative expenditure for hosts in Zug as well as for us. Zug Tourism encourages innovative offers and bundles them in order to increase the attractiveness of Zug as a travel destination and thus generate more tourism. The additional income generated will contribute to creating attractive value for guests and visitors to the region.”
