State of Guerrero and Airbnb join forces to promote sustainable travel

Guerrero is home to Acapulco, the most popular beach destination amongst Mexican travelers. Known for its natural attractions and delicious cuisine, Guerrero is a must for travelers visiting México. In 2017, 120,400 tourists arrived in Guerrero and stayed in an Airbnb listing, welcomed by one of 3,200 local hosts.

The Airbnb community in Guerrero is very diverse. In 2017, the average age of hosts was 42 and 12% of them were elders, over the age of 60. Airbnb hosts make a small but significant amount of money sharing their homes through our platform; a typical host in Guerrero made 47,000 pesos in 2017.

Congressman Eduardo Cueva, President of the Board of Directors of the State Congress, Héctor Apreza, Secretary of Finance, Ernesto Higinio Rodríguez Escalona, Secretary of Tourism and Angel Terral, Mexico’s Country Manager at Airbnb met today in and announced an agreement to help promote sustainable tourism in the state.

“This alliance represents a win-win, for all, this is key for us. The state is a good  destination for travelers, with a good hotels,  condominiums, and time shares; therefore adding an additional and regulated option adds to what tourists can choose from when they travel”, remarked Ernesto Higinio Rodríguez Escalona, Secretary of Tourism.

“We want to continue working side by side with the local government, making the Airbnb community an ally and promoting every corner of the state with even more travelers; even those that lack traditional infrastructure. The objective is that the whole community benefits from the economic impact that tourism brings. We are sure that this is only the first in many joint projects to come” closed Angel Terral, Mexico’s Country Manager at Airbnb.
