Taiwan Airbnb hosts donate to Hualien earthquake disaster relief, share free hugs

On February 6th, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Hualien County, Taiwan. Our Taiwan Airbnb host community immediately rallied together to respond to the call for action.

Disaster Relief Donation

To date, disaster relief donations for those affected by the earthquake have topped NT$111,300 (US$ 3,797), as contributions poured in from 4 community hubs of over 40 hosts across Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. The final sum was donated to the Hualien Social Affairs Department.

Andy, Taipei community leader; Amau, Taichung community leader; Jess and Ding Ma, Tainan community leaders and Ting Wei, Kaohsiung community leader, led the donation movement. “We know this is a difficult time for a lot of Taiwanese people, and we would like to give back to society,” they shared.

Together Hualien – Free Hugs

On February 15th, our Hualien host community and a few enthusiastic minsu hosts gathered at Hualien Train Station with opened arms and hearts, to bring comfort to travelers and local Hualien citizens. They shared free hugs and warm handshakes, while offering their blessings and best wishes.

Airbnb Hualien host community leader Guan Yu Lai, who led the Free Hug movement, shared how the team tapped on social media to amplify their efforts. The event initially drew a crowd of 30 locals, but attracted more and more interested passersby and visitors who had heard about the event. Visitors were encouraged to upload photos of Hualien to Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #HualienSafe to show the world that Hualien was ready to welcome them with open arms.

We are heartened by the efforts of our Airbnb host community in Taiwan to lift up their fellow countrymen, and will continue to work closely with the Hualien community to support them in this time of need.
